The Talmaweg in Barendrecht came to be in the 1920s of the last century. To this day it’s a recognizable site within the urban fabric, both on a urban and architectural scale. The stretched structure of consecutive clusters of both pre- and post-war buildings are very prominent, while also being quite atypical compared to the newly established suburbs surrounding the area. Furthermore the appearance and size of the buildings are more pronounced, smaller-scale and have a more village-like nuance.

The project of 20 social rental-homes is divided up into two locations that are 450 meters spread apart, named Talmaweg-North and -South. Before the design process an extensive study was conducted looking at the morphology and the prominent architectural elements of the existing typologies. Based on this study it was decided to design contemporary architecture that alludes to the surrounding pre-war buildings which were characterized for utilizing tiled roofs, low hanging gutters, bay windows, white fascia boards and traditional brickwork.
