The Potomac Crescent Waldorf School believes in "...the preservation of childhood, the importance of imaginative play and time in nature, the integration of arts and academics, and the development of human beings who will make a difference in the world." This newly completed school in Alexandria, VA, designed by Cedar Architecture, beautifully integrates nature and education.

The 9,000 sqft space, inspired by Rudolf Steiner's educational philosophy, offers a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, fostering creativity and a love of learning for children in Pre-K through 5th grade. With natural materials and a thoughtful design, this school is a nurturing environment where students and teachers thrive as one with the sustainable design.

Rudolf Steiner's developmental approach emphasizes goodness, beauty and truth. It endeavors to build a diverse community, and cultivates in each child a sense of meaning and purpose in life, kindness, respect, academic excellence, confidence, creativity and a love of learning.

The philosophy that the school adheres to is deeply appealing to Cedar's architectural practice as it devotes itself to designing with nature. The school, both architecturally and educationally, uses only natural materials in its learning process - A full range of development is emphasized for the children.

The child, and the teacher, are integrated into their daily environment. This architectural project aimed to ingrain these beliefs into the very structure that supports this childhood development.
