School of Business and General Education in Sierre

The new business and general education school is located south of the CFF railway tracks, marking the city of Sierre’s development beyond the tracks alongside the mobility infrastructure. The Bellevue plain is thus equipped with a second educational facility, following the School of Social Work. The site is characterized by two reference levels: the first facing north towards the CFF train station and west towards the Monderêche road, and the second opening to the south and east onto the Bellevue plain. The school’s position, straddling the slope break, allows for a clear separation of programs. The school has two entrances: the first is located at the bus station level, and the second is at the pedestrian bridge linking the northern part of the city and the CFF station. The entrance to the gymnasium is located on the lower level.

The school’s design offers a typology suited to the requirements and specificities of the educational level it houses. A ring of classrooms is served by a balcony-like corridor overlooking the large, light-filled central space. This central space, occupied by the interplay of stair flights, becomes the school’s reference and identity space. The classrooms arranged around the central area enjoy varied orientations and lighting.

The ground floor hosts public programs, including the restaurant and two auditoriums shared with HES_SO, which also occupies the upper level. The concrete structure addresses the challenge of stacking school programs above the double sports hall by transferring the loads of four large walls to the perimeter. This results in V-shaped structures ensuring seismic stability. The glass façades, adorned with polished mirror-like pleated stainless steel railings, reveal the structure. The interior materiality is understated: exposed concrete, transparent or tinted glass, and aluminum cladding elements.
