Two primary schools, a day-care centre and an area health authority share a new, green complex: a Community School. The goal is to encourage interaction between the groups.
The design allows each individual part of the building to function at its best. Each classroom, for example, has a ‘block’ containing a cloakroom, toilets, kitchen, (computer) work stations and a mezzanine. The whole complex surrounds two inner ‘courtyards’ in the form of a communal assembly hall and winter garden. This forms the basis for the placing of two playgrounds. One, for the youngest children, is safely fenced off, the other, for the older and local children has a large platform. Each age group and school has its own entrance.

Originally designed by Dok Architects in 2000, Educational Complex De Kikker underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2023/2024. The outdated bright green façade panels were replaced with custom-designed, colorful solar panels from Solarix. Through close collaboration, a vibrant façade design in shades of green and yellow was created, reflecting the playful character of the two schools, the daycare center, and OKC housed in the building.

The renovated façade spans 1,444 m2 and combines aesthetics with sustainability. The solar panels, finished with textured glass, generate 67,000 kWh of energy annually. This façade renovation turned a challenge into an opportunity.

With this transformation, De Kikker takes a significant step toward future- proofing public buildings. The new façade is not only a striking feature for the neighborhood but also an inspiring example for children to learn about sustainable energy.

As the finishing touch, ‘De Module’ worked with students to create a cheerful mural on the public tribune, reflecting the school’s theme.
