Fully in line with its historical function, the Ketelhuis will become the (figurative) warm heart of Tilburg's Spoorzone. The monumental, former NS building will be completely transformed.
This paragon of postwar utilitarian construction has served as the heat source for the Workshop for many years. First with coal, and later with gas. Now the Boiler House is getting a new life as a place to live, work and relax. Located on the corner of the Burgemeester Brokxlaan and the Willem II Passage, which also puts you within one walking minute in downtown Tilburg.
In the new situation, the building consists of eight floors. On the ground and second floors of the existing building is space for catering and flex spaces. The six floors above will have 48 apartments. During the renovation, an inventory is made of which elements we can maximally preserve and bring back in the new situation. With this we try to refer as much as possible to the old function of the building. From the inside of the Ketelhuis there is a concrete construction that carries the superstructure like a table. This construction will remain in sight, showing how the superstructure was realized within the existing building.
The new cassette facade refers to the old boilers. The rhythm of the new facades fits an industrial environment. By mounting this cassette facade overtly in plain sight, the architect creates a similar image and sense of robustness. The construction is separated by an intermediate layer consisting of Creneo Block profiles of 20mm in a black color and ensures that the old Ketelhuis building remains on its own and the new building is detached from its plinth. This created a beautiful articulation between the original building and the new superstructure above it.
