St. Paul American Indian Magnet School

Project Overview
The remodeled American Indian Magnet School is a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and learning. Key features include open collaborative spaces, and a library reimagined as a long house, which acts as the school's cultural center. All-inclusive restrooms enhance accessibility, making the school suitable for various cultural and community events. This renovation and expansion align the facility with the district's commitment to creating flexible, culturally aware, 21st Century learning environments that also serve as a community hub.

ASI’s Contribution
This project involved a multi-level remodel of an existing school building, with the first phase completed at the end of 2021, and the final phase delivered by the end of 2023. Key features include a linear ceiling system with acoustical backers spanning 6,000 square feet, crafted from solid mixed-grain hemlock and finished with a custom stain and clear Class A fire-rated varnish. The project also includes a grille wall system covering 6,700 square feet, utilizing the same wood species and finish for a cohesive look.

A striking element of the remodel is the dining area ceiling, designed in a sunburst pattern with linear wood ceiling planks positioned between the main structural beams. The grille wall system in this space is mounted on bending wood backers, allowing for a smooth curvature that maintains consistent spacing throughout the rounded room. Additionally, a specialty Alumiline ceiling system at the exterior entry canopy complements the vestibule wood ceiling. This features custom aluminum planks finished with a wood grain powder coating to match the linear wood stain. This durable aluminum material protects the canopy’s underside from weather elements while enhancing the building’s visual appeal.
